Don't sweat it. Underboob sweat happens, and it's nothing to feel ashamed of—but boob deodorant means don't need to deal with the daily dampness either.

Boob sweat is the body's natural response to heat or stress, whether you're working out or feeling nervous. It's totally normal to sweat, but it's not necessary to sulk in sweat thanks to boob deodorants.

Clammy cleavage? You’re not alone. Sweat slinks both beneath and between boobs of all cup sizes, particularly those of the more voluptuous variety.

Here’s why boob sweat happens, why it’s nothing to be ashamed of and some all-natural boob sweat deodorants to safely stop any smelliness when your body inevitably does what the body does.

What is boob sweat, and why does it happen?

Boob sweat happens when skin touches skin, and the sudoriferous glands (read: sweat glands) produce sweat that can’t evaporate. There are three types of sweat glands—eccrine, apocrine and apoeccrine sweat glands—and apocrine glands, in particular, are present around the breasts.

Tight, restrictive clothing like some sports bras can cause boob sweat to build up beneath and between the boobs, where there’s no breathing room—especially in hot environments or physically demanding conditions, such as throughout the summer season or during exercise.

Hormonal fluctuations can also cause boob sweat, as changes in estrogen levels during menstruation can impact the body’s thermoregulatory system. Hormonal imbalances from menopause can also be the culprit of a moist cleavage.

But don’t sweat it—sweat serves a purifying purpose. Your skin secretes sweat to cool off; it’s a naturally occurring thermoregulation mechanism that makes you feel fresher (albeit smellier, sometimes). Sweat also serves an excretory function, clearing excess metabolic waste and toxins from the body—and, at times, it all just so happens to pour from the pores around your boobs.

If you don’t keep cool and clean, however, between-the-boobs sweat and underboob sweat can cause certain skin conditions like chafing rashes and intertrigo, which, in some severe circumstances, can cause fungal or bacterial buildup and, ultimately, yeast infections.

Why does boob sweat smell?

Boob sweat may smell (and may smell differently from other sweaty spots) because it comes from different glands. While eccrine glands cover the bulk of the body, apocrine glands surround the breasts. The eccrine glands primarily regulate body temperature, but the apocrine glands are scent glands, so the sweat that comes out of them is thicker and odorous.

While sweat scents vary, boob sweat commonly smells musky or like vinegar. The odor emanates from bacteria that break down the sweat as it surfaces on the skin.

So, if there were a such thing as normal, smelly sweat is seriously so.

Note: Deodorant is debatably safe to swipe below and between the breasts. While there’s no conclusive evidence that confirms that deodorant is a cause of cancer, some scientists suggest that the potentially harmful ingredients (like aluminum-based compounds) in some odor-preventing products could be connected to breast cancer and advise against it.

While several studies have failed to prove any increased risk of breast cancer amongst antiperspirant and deodorant users, limited research investigates the possible correlation. There are mostly only case-control studies (in which people with and without breast cancer were asked about previous use of antiperspirants and deodorants), but there haven’t been any strong epidemiologic studies. More research is required to confirm a correlation between deodorant use and breast cancer.

10 Tips to Banish Boob Sweat

Beyond using boob deodorant—whether in the form or a glide stick, lotion or powder—here are some other tips to stop sweating beneath and between the boobs:

  1. Wear breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, spandex or nylon instead of synthetic materials and others that tend to trap heat and moisture, like rayon and polyester.

  2. Choose moisture-wicking bras that are designed to pull the moisture from the skin surrounding your breasts and allow it to evaporate (there are even sweat-specific options, like Modibodi’s Sweat-Proof Bra, which can hold up to 20 ml of sweat, or the Girlfriend Collective's Bianca One Shoulder Bra).

  3. Forgo the bra altogether and let your boobs bounce (and breathe) freely.

  4. Insert absorbent bra pads or liners (made of breathable materials) designed to soak up underboob sweat (like More of Me to Love's cotton and bamboo bra liner).

  5. Avoid tight clothes, which don’t leave your boobs any room to breathe.

  6. Try natural remedies, like argan oil, which is a natural fatty acid that nourishes your skin with anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

  7. Maintain good hygiene by regularly showering your body and by regularly changing and laundering your clothes.

  8. Stay hydrated so your body can more easily regulate its temperature without sweating so much.

  9. Cut back on sweat-inducing foods and beverages—like caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods—that can cause increased sweating.

  10. Take care of your mental health! Stress can contribute to increased sweating, including around the breasts.
